Engaged in April? Here’s What the Fuck to Do First
By Engaged AF Magazine — for brides who don’t do boring
Welcome to the emotional trampoline that is wedding planning. One second you’re crying happy tears, the next you’re rage-Googling “why are wedding venues so fucking expensive” while eating frosting straight out of the tub.
You just got engaged? CONGRATS, you beautiful disaster.
Now let’s get your shit together.
This isn’t some basic Pinterest checklist. This is your real-deal, hot-mess-express, champagne-fueled survival guide to starting your wedding planning without setting anything on fire. (Metaphorically. Hopefully.)
1. Fucking Celebrate
Like, actually. Stop trying to figure out napkin colors and start popping bottles.
Tell your people. Post that ring selfie. Ugly cry with your mom. Eat something covered in sprinkles. You just made a forever decision — treat it like you just won a goddamn Oscar.
You’ve got a fiancé now. That’s hot.
2. Have the Budget Talk (Yes, That One)
It’s not sexy. It’s not fun. But it’s necessary as hell. Sit your ass down with your partner and figure out:
- What can we actually afford?
- Who’s contributing? (Parents? Grandma? That weird rich uncle who smells like cigars and says “sport” a lot?)
- What do you want to spend money on?
Don’t play the “we’ll figure it out later” game. That’s how you end up crying in a parking lot over florals that cost more than a used car.
3. Book Your Fucking Venue
This is the linchpin, the keystone, the glittery Jenga piece holding up the entire circus. Without a venue, you don’t have a date. Without a date, you can’t book vendors. And without vendors, you’ve basically just got a Pinterest board and a stress rash.
Venues are like hot tubs on Craigslist — the good ones disappear FAST and the weird ones smell like mold and regret. So move your ass and lock one down. Now.
4. Write a Guest List That Makes You Cry
Get out a notepad, a spreadsheet, a bar napkin — whatever. Start writing down names.
This will be the first time you realize how many people you secretly hate.
Do a rough draft. Don’t overthink it. You just need to know:
- Are you feeding 40 people or 400?
- Are you seating people or letting them fight for folding chairs like it’s musical goddamn chairs?
- Will Aunt Susan bring her pet iguana again?
Guest count affects everything: venue size, catering cost, how many centerpieces you’ll pretend to care about, etc.
5. Pick Your Holy Trinity (Top 3 Priorities)
You cannot care about everything. That’s how people end up with panic attacks over fucking napkin rings.
Pick your top 3:
- Photos?
- Booze?
- Fireworks?
- A live goat that delivers rings?
Whatever gets you excited — THAT’S where your time and money go. The rest? Do the bare minimum or delegate to your friend who thinks “being helpful” means buying a bedazzler.
6. Get Organized, You Beautiful Goblin
Whether you’re a Google Sheets girly or a notebook hoarder who writes in glitter pen while drinking boxed wine — get a system.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be slightly less chaotic than you were yesterday.
Make lists. Set reminders. Accept that you will forget shit. It’s part of the charm.
7. Ignore the Noise and Do It Your Fucking Way
You do not need a full mood board, six backup vendors, and a seating chart made of driftwood by next Tuesday.
Take. A. Fucking. Breath.
You’re not planning this wedding for Instagram.
You’re planning it for YOU and the person who wants to marry your weird, loud, incredible ass.
Fuck the pressure. Fuck the timelines. Just start. Wherever you are, that’s the place to begin.
TL;DR:
If you just got engaged in April, the world’s gonna come at you fast with opinions, checklists, and glittery bullshit. Here’s your reminder to slow down, pour a drink, and plan this thing like the legend you are.
Welcome to wedding planning. Let’s raise some hell.
